    A musical instrument. It produces music and colorful beams of light when fingers dance along its cords. Delphia played the air harp. 
  • airess

    A female heir to a great Island estate. Airess is equatable to a royal title. 
  • airgirl

    A derogatory term for a girl from the Islands. 
  • airscraper

    A tall building in the Middler level of Indra. 
  • alterations

    Cosmetic procedures including skin replenishment, dimple insertions, chest alteration, skeletal adjustment, stretching treatments to increase height, vitamin injections, rosebud cheek infusions and blemish evulsion. 
  • Anti-Indrithian Hate Speech

    Any speech against Indra, the Independent High Council or the laws of Indra. It is highly illegal.
  • Archive access chip

    A small device inserted into the Archive access slot in the wrist. Archive access chips allow the user to enter the Archives in order to interact with an Archive memory or simulation. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra.
  • Archive access slot

    A small slot in the wrist where Indrithians can insert an Archive access chip. It is activated with a double tap on the wrist. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra.
  • Archive memories

    Archive memories are Indrithian citizen’s personal memories, made available to them by the Independent High Council. Archive memories are provided at the discretion of the High Council. Memories are stored on an individualized chip assigned to each Indrithian citizen by the High Council during childhood. Archive memories replicate real events as the citizen lived them and allow citizens to enter their own experiences. It’s strictly forbidden to go into someone else’s Archive memories.   • Archive stasis

    A medically induced coma-like state of people confined to Shadow Status. The facility in the High Council Building where these people are kept and monitored is Archive stasis. 
  • Archives

    A fully immersive environment accessed by activating a personal memory chip or other access chip. Archive experiences include replications of historical events, educational training simulations and reduplications of personal memories. The Archives serve to educate, entertain and enlighten the citizens of Indra. Access to the Archives is strictly controlled and monitored by the Independent High Council.   • arise sensor

    The morning alarm at the Orphanage.

B

  • beamer

    A light source, used for headlights on vehicles and handheld lights. The handheld beam can be used in different ways. It can shine a beam forward from the unit or the unit can be set to project the light into a floating ball that can follow the unit at a set distance. 
  • blaster

    A handheld weapon that shoots energy pulses. It gets its charge from a replaceable energy cell. 
  • booster

    Booster is a term for medication. They are used for legitimate medical reasons but can also be used recreationally. 
  • bottom out

    Used in both the Orphanage and the Academy, slang for “kicked out” or “fail out.” It is a reference to being sent to a lower level. 

C

  • caretakers

    People who work in the Orphanage and are in charge of caring for the children. 
  • chewers

    A slang term for drugs.
  • chip (aka Mandatory Temporal Lobe Implant)

    A small device implanted in the brain shortly after birth that is connected to the Archives. All citizens have a chip, though most do not realize it is there or what it does. The chip transmits memories to the Archives, dampens emotions, is a locator and acts as a perimeter control device. It must be removed before traveling beyond the dome. 
  • cohabitant

    A spouse of the opposite sex. A cohabitation pairing requires approval by Indra.
  • Cohabitated Unit

    A Cohabitated Unit contains a family, including a cohabitation pair and one child.
  • core-low

    A slang term and insult meaning the lowest of the low, garbage. It originated from the idea that the lower you are, the closer you are to the Earth’s core. In Indra, the higher someone lives, the higher their status. Vice versa, the lower you live, the lower your status. 
  • Court of Honors

    The senior committee of officers within the PCF that awards honors to PCF officers who warrant recognition as well as punish those who have failed in their duties. 
  • Courting Dance

    The formal interaction performed at an Emergence Ball between the Proper Indrithian Young Lady whose ball it is and the Proper Indrithian Young Men who are the guests and potential cohabitants. There is no touching during the Courting Dance. 

D

  • Debut Spin

    Part of the Emergence Ball. A Proper Indrithian Young Woman stands on a spinning platform that rises into the air in front of all the guests at the ball. While the platform spins, the young woman performs a series of elegant poses. It demonstrates poise and self-control. To fall from the platform during the Debut Spin at an Emergence Ball is a social catastrophe. Mastering the Debut Spin is one of the many skills perfected in Etiquette Training.
  • dirtbaby, dirtmonger, dirt squirt

    Slang terms used to insult someone from the Lower Levels of Indra. 

E

  • earfeed

    A small device worn in the ear for direct communication. It is also equipped to receive an audiofeed of news, information and entertainment broadcast by the City of Indra. 
  • Education and Socialization Cluster

    A group of islands that house various education and socialization facilities. The Socialization Club that Livia attends for Etiquette Training is in the Education and Socialization Cluster. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra.
  • Emergence Ball

    A grand formal social event of Upper Indrithian society where a Proper Indrithian Young Lady who is turning 17 years of age is presented before Upper Indrithian guests and offered for cohabitation. The goal of an Emergence Ball is for the young lady to find a cohabitant. Upper Indrithian girls attend Socialization Clubs and undergo years of Etiquette Training to prepare for their Emergence Ball. 
  • Etiquette Training

    Mandatory classes all Islander girls must attend to learn proper Indrithian behavior and prepare for their Emergence Balls. Etiquette Training is done in Socialization Clubs that are located in the Islands in the Education and Socialization Cluster. Etiquette Training includes: Courting Dance, Debut Spin, Dining Instruction, Elocution, Estate Management, Event Design, Fan Communication, Feminine Modesty, Leisure Skills, Maintaining Grace under Difficult Circumstances, Physical Maintenance, Portrayal of Obliviousness upon Encountering Unpleasantness, Polite Conversation Befitting a Formal Engagement, Proper Gender Roles, Sash Binding, Support of Your Cohabitant. 
  • EX2 pill

    A pill that controls fertility and prevents multiple births. All females of Indra take an EX2 pill every day, starting at age 12. It was created by Armand Cosmo. 

F

  • Fan Communication

    Fan Communication is taught to Island girls of Indra as part of Etiquette Training. It is a complicated set of positions and actions done with a fan to convey interest or the lack of it to a potential suitor at an Emergence Ball.
  • Final Placement

    The assignment given to a graduate of the PCF academy. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra.
  • Final Simulation

    The last test given to PCF cadets before they graduate. It is a rigorous simulation meant to test all of their training. The Final Simulation is a group test, with cadets broken into teams and headed by a cadet assigned to be mission captain. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra.
  • flinging

    Ejection from the Archives. Access to the Archives is at the discretion of the Independent High Council. If a person attempts to use the Archives in an unauthorized manner, the person will be ejected. 
  • Founding Families

    Descendants of the original group of people who founded Indra. The twenty Founding Families are members of the Independent High Council. For more information, go to Excerpts in Time of the Twins.

  • gray suits

    A slang term for the people who work in the High Council Building and other areas of the administration of Indra, all of whom wear the gray suits required as the uniform of their positions. Aides and advisers to the Independent High Council are gray suits. Waslo is a gray suit. Gray suits are Middlers and Islanders.
  • Great Catastrophe

    An unspecified global disaster that made the surface of Earth uninhabitable. 

H

  • hab unit

    Private living quarters unlike the barracks, which are shared living quarters. The size of a person’s hab unit is determined by the level of work assignment. 
  • High Council Archive Commission

    The group of people who manage the Archives. The Commission also monitors all Archive activity and has the authority to fling people from the Archives, as well as impose Shadow Status on those who have misused the Archive. 
  • High Security Detainment

    The PCF facility in the Independent High Council Building, where they interrogate those citizens suspected of crimes against Indra. 
  • holocomm

    A handheld communication device that projects an image of the person connected in the communication. 
  • holoscreen and holoreader

    A flat, rectangular electronic device that projects images or text. 
  • holoshow

    Entertainment programming that is watched on a holoscreen. 
  • hover (aka hovercraft)

    A generic term for multiple-rider transportation vehicles that utilize hover technology, excluding single-rider speeders. 
  • Hubber

    Someone who lives in the Hub level of Indra. 

I

  • Independent High Council

    The governing body of Indra, ruling from the High Council Building in the Administrative Zone of the Middler level of Indra. It is an aristocracy in which the twenty seats of the Independent High Council are held by the members of the Founding Families. For more information, go to Excerpts in Time of the Twins.
  • Indrithian

    An Indrithian is a citizen of Indra. This does not include the people of Rock Bottom. 
  • Indrithian Citizen’s Pledge

    The short statement Indrithians recite to show their loyalty and appreciation for the Independent High Council and the City of Indra.

    INDRITHIAN CITIZEN'S PLEDGE:

    The toxic area outside the dome that surrounds Indra. It extends about a mile beyond the dome. 
  • Islander

    Someone who lives on one of the luxurious floating Island estates of Indra. Islander is the highest social status of Indra. The Islanders are the elite and privileged class of Indra.   • Lower Levels

    When Indrithians use the term “Lower Levels,” they are referring to the Hub. For an Indrithian, the Lower Levels do not include Rock Bottom because they have been taught that Rock Bottom is not part of Indra. When someone from Rock Bottom or the Outlands uses the term “Lower Levels,” they mean Rock Bottom and Core Low.

    Someone who lives in the Middler level of Indra. 
  • mudpeople, mudgirl

    Slang terms used to insult someone from the Lower Levels of Indra.
  • mutants

    Mutants are severely genetically damaged, devolved to the point that they are no longer recognizable as human beings. They live in the tunnels outside Rock Bottom and in Core Low. They are violent and savage creatures who kill and eat people. They set traps in the tunnels around Rock Bottom to catch scavengers and people traveling through the tunnels to reach the Outlands.
  • Mutants of Rock Bottom (aka MoRB)

    A training simulation used in the PCF Academy.

  • patroller

    An enclosed hover vehicle equipped with weapons used by the PCF. It can transport two to four people. 
  • plexi-clear

    A transparent building material used in the airscrapers and skytowers of Indra.
  • pod (aka sleeper pod, sleeper)

    The generic term for a bed. It can be simple and functional (as in the hab units of Lower Indra) or luxurious and designed for maximum comfort (as are those of the Islanders).
  • popper and crappies

    Slang terms for the PCF used by the rebels. 
  • Population Control Forces (aka PCF)

    The military of Indra, responsible for all policing duties of the city. Joining the PCF is not voluntary, you must be chosen. All PCF officers must graduate from the PCF Academy. Low-ranking PCF officers live in assigned units in the Hub, while higher ranking officers live in the Middler level. Lex and Kane, once they graduated from the Academy, were given their placements in the PCF. Lex was placed with Specials Operations: Rock Bottom Patrol and Kane was given a secret mission.   • Pulmonary Accelerant 127 (aka PA127)

    An additive pumped into the air of Indra.

    A utilitarian synthetic food substance. They are made to meet basic nutritional requirements with no attempt to taste or look appealing. Most people of Indra eat only rations. High-quality synth food is available only to Upper Indrithians. 
  • rebels

    People who fight against what they see as the tyrannical rule of the Independent High Council. Most rebels are from Rock Bottom, the level of Indra trapped below the city. The rebels access the upper levels of Indra through tunnels and run missions to steal supplies for the people of Rock Bottom to help them survive, as well as to undermine and destabilize the Independent High Council.   • Rebel Penalty

    The strict punishment for citizens engaged in rebel activity enforced by the PCF and the Independent High Council. For more information, go to Excerpts in Time of the Twins.
  • refuse hauler

    A large, unmanned vehicle used for transporting garbage out of Indra. They are controlled remotely, as they travel under the dome of Indra and into the irradiated zone on underground roads. They dump refuse in the open land beyond the irradiated zone of Indra.
  • rigger

    Workers who live on the rigs. They are low-level Indrithians, mostly from the Hub, although they are somewhat apart from the normal three social levels of Indra. 
  • Rock Bottom Patrol

    The unit of the PCF tasked with policing Rock Bottom and eliminating rebel threats from Rock Bottom. Within the PCF it is considered the most dangerous assignment. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra.

  • scav

    A slang term for the scavengers of Rock Bottom. 
  • scrubber, smudger, subbie

    Derogatory slang terms for Hubbers, used by upper Indrithians.
  • Shadow Status

    A harsh and cruel punishment where a person is banished to the Archives to wander faceless and voiceless, a living death. People banished to Shadow Status appear to others in the Archive as shadowy, hooded figures and serve as a warning to obey the laws of Indra.   • silitex

    A high-tech fabric used for PCF uniforms and armor.
  • simulation (aka sim)

    A fully immersive program accessible in the Archives. Simulations are replications of historical events and educational training programs. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra.
  • skytower

    A tall building in the Middler level of Indra. 
  • sleeper (aka pod, sleeper pod)

    The generic term for a bed. It can be simple and functional (as in the hab units of Lower Indra) or luxurious and designed for maximum comfort (as are those of the Islanders).
  • sniffers

    A slang term for drugs.
  • sound painting

    An art form that transforms sound into color that floats in the air or can be applied to a surface. Sound painting requires specialized equipment.
  • Special Operative

  • Special Operations (aka SpecOps)

    An elite unit of the PCF responsible for the most dangerous assignments, including Rock Bottom Patrol. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra.
  • speeder

    A hover vehicle for a single rider. Some speeders can accommodate two riders, though they are intended for a single rider for maximum speed and maneuverability.
  • strato

    Slang for “great” or “impressive.” It is a reference to being of a higher status, like the Islands near the stratosphere.
  • stunner

    A less-intense version of the weapon called a pacifier used by PCF. It is an electrified prod that gives a sharp shock and is used in childrearing. Also, the name for a handheld grenade that is activated and thrown. After a short delay, it sends out a shockwave and a piercing noise. 
  • Supplement 2.2

    The pill a woman of Indra takes in order to become pregnant. It counteracts the EX2 pill that controls fertility and prevents multiple births. 
  • synth

    Short for “synthetic,” it is used to refer to all artificially created organisms, including plants, animals and food.

  • The Book of Indra

  • The Girl Tied with Rope

    A recreational simulation. It was the only simulation they had at the Orphanage.
  • The Tellings

    Lyrical, spoken-word stories the people of Rock Bottom recite as an oral history. There are many Tellings, including: “The Telling of the Time of the Twins,” “The Beginning,” “The Tunnels,” “The Heel of Indra,” “The Rebels” and “Before.” For more information, go to Excerpts in Time of the Twins.
  • The Telling of the Time of the Twins

    One of the Tellings recited by the people of Rock Bottom. It is part of the twin lore and a prophecy that predicts a set of twins will save the people of Indra. There are different versions of “The Telling of the Time of the Twins.” In some versions, it is specifically stated that the twins will be in their 17th year.

    One of the Tellings recited by the people of Rock Bottom about the world before the Great Catastrophe.

  • The Twins of Prophecy

    A reference to the twin lore that predicts a set of twins will save the people of Indra. For more information, go to Excerpts in Rebels: City of Indra and Time of the Twins.
  • transporter

    A large, enclosed hover vehicle that can transport 20 to 25 people.
  • transporter tubes

    The enclosed mass transit system that connects the Hub to Upper Indra.
  • tunnel runner

    A rebel who travels the tunnel between Rock Bottom and the Last Outpost, bringing supplies to the people stationed there. They also escort people leaving Indra to protect them from mutant attacks on their way to the Last Outpost. They usually work in teams of two.

  • Upper Indra

    Upper Indra is the Islands and the Middler levels of the city, though the Middler level is considered lower status than the Islands.

  • ventilator

    Slang name for a large blaster. It’s also used to describe a breathing aid.

  • wrist implant

    A slot in the wrist where Archive access chips are inserted.
